Modern School provision

Methoni is large enough to provide Nursery, Primary and Secondary education within the town, and also serves the surrounding villages.

The Nursery and primary School Share a site mid way between the sea and the town centre. Entrance is from either end of a short road between the road that runs from the sea front to the Methoni-Foinikounda Road, passing next to the Pizzaria, and the lower road where the post office is situated.

The Secondary School is situated on the hillside at the back of the town not far from St Nicholas Church.

After school many children attend English language classes at a separate language school situated on the upper road in the town centre.

The Capodistrian School in Methoni

One of the buildings that I encountered when I first visited Methoni was the Capodistrian School - built following the end of the Turkish Occupation and named after the First Prime Minister - Capodistrias.

During the occupation, the teaching of Greek had been forbidden but priests took this on the role of teaching at what were called "hidden schools"

The school can be seen in the distance from the lower road of the town but is situated on a side road and still had its roof in 1999. Sadly it no longer has; I always felt it should be restored as a museum.
