Why Work in Methoni?

View from the upper land Some people come on holiday to Methoni, fall in love and want to live and work there. Others return from abroad to help parents, taking on inherited land and property. Some come for health reasons, but still need to work at least part time, or as a hobby. Artists, writers, musicians, come fro a break, inspiration. Migrant workers may arrive for a season, and then find their own niche and stay on.

Tourism

During the Summer months the hotels, bars and restaurants in Greece require staff - but the tourist season is short in Methoni and most places are run by family members, with local help. The area is developing though so there may be opportunities outside the town.

Building

One of the most popular jobs is in building; Those with specialist skills do well, but labourers are required too. Sometimes it helps if you own the specialist equipment or machinery for a task.

Agricultural Work

Those of us who live abroad and own land know how difficult it can be to find the correct workers. There is so much land around the area, that migrant workers can find casual work easily and soon settle, often with regular work. Local farmers may help too, especially if they specialise in specific crops. Land clearance projects, may require a combination of heavy machinery, used by self-employed experts, and localised clearing or maintenance by seasonal workers.

Labour costs are in the region of €40.00 /day but specialists will charge more and often charge for the complete job, rather than a daily wage. This can be beneficial to both parties. As with any work, there can be a language barrier to understanding and it is vital to be sure that employer and employee know exactly what is expected.

Crafts

The market for crafts is small in Methoni but the great thing about this type of work is that it can be made in Methoni and maybe sold elsewhere or online. Wonderful to be able to pursue your hobby in a lovely setting for part of the year and ideal if you can survive on part time work.

Health and Beauty

As the population grows I believe there will be more scope for Health and Beauty experts. Methoni already has two hairdressing salons and its own dentist, chemist and a shop selling specialist local produce.

National Insurance

Workers should not forget that they need to be covered by National Insurance, paid for by themselves or their employer. In Greece this is provided by membership of the appropriate association. OGA is for farmers, EKA is for domestic and shop workers. TBE is for business owners. Government workers also have thier own scheme.

How to find work

So far I have not come across any Professional employment agencies in Methoni. Labour is usually hired by word of mouth and recommendation. New arrivals to the area need to build a reputation for themselves by being prompt, understanding what is required, and giving value for money.

If finding work seems to be daunting, finding workers is even more so. Both parties have to consider the rate for the type of work, transport to and from the workplace, provision of lunch and refreshment, provision, where necessary, of national Insurance contributions, the equipment to be used, safety and, sometimes, accommodation provided.

Note:

Greece is a member state of the European Union and therefore subject to EU employment law. You are advised to check regulations for permits, tax and other legal requirements.
